Generic Azithromycin
Approved Uses: Treatment of bacterial infections, such as:
Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis)
Skin and soft tissue infections (e.g., cellulitis, abscesses)
Urethritis and cervicitis
Off-Label Uses: Treatment of other bacterial infections, such as Lyme disease and chlamydia
Dosage and Administration
- Dosage Forms: Tablets (250mg, 500mg), capsules (250mg), and oral suspension (100mg/5mL, 200mg/5mL)
- Recommended Dosage:
- Adults: 500mg orally on day 1, followed by 250mg orally once daily for 4 days
- Children: 10mg/kg orally once daily for 3 days
- Administration: Tablets and capsules can be taken with or without food. Shake oral suspension well before use.
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity: To Azithromycin or any macrolide antibiotic
- Severe Hepatic Impairment: Contraindicated in patients with severe hepatic impairment
Side Effects
- Common Side Effects: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Serious Side Effects: Anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, QT prolongation
Interactions
- Warfarin: Concomitant use may increase the risk of bleeding
- Nelfinavir: Concomitant use may increase the risk of QT prolongation
- Other Interactions: Concomitant use with certain medications (e.g., digoxin, cyclosporine) may require dose adjustments or monitoring
